The Hooligans got down to the business of building “structures” today. Miss Mess preferred to call hers a robot. Call it what you will, they were constructing, and it was serious work.
I cut some “blocks” from a scrap piece of Styrofoam, and set them out with some colourful wooden sticks, a few coffee stir-sticks, and some chopped up drinking straws.
I had poked a few holes in some of the blocks, because the styrofoam was really dense, and I thought it might be tricky for the youngest to push the sticks into it. Turned out, that was a good idea, because it was challenging, even for the older Hooligans.

They spent quite a bit of time working away, joining blocks, and sliding straws onto sticks. I’m going to say they were at it for over at least a half an hour.
It took a lot of concentration ), and held their interest until every last block had been used. Now, that’s a successful activity in my books!

We attached a ribbon when they were done, so the structures/robots could be hung at home like a mobile. Aren’t these cool? The Hooligans were so proud of their creations.

I have been saving up some Styrofoam for something! Hmmm…
Very cool, my girls would really enjoy something like this! I love the way you hung them up, they look beautifully abstract.
we did something similar but on a smaller scale the other day with polystyrene balls of varying size and toothpicks-
Very cool idea! Those would look like MOLECULAR structures!!
