Springtime has well and truly arrived!! The thermometer on my deck reads 25 degrees this afternoon
I was getting out a new bucket of sidewalk chalk this morning, knowing full-well we’d be outside all day today. I looked at all the bits and pieces of our old chalk and was trying to figure out if I could do anything with them. I wondered if we could grind them up and turn them into paint, but that seemed like a lot of work. Then I remembered reading that you can make sidewalk paint out of cornstarch and water. (In the U.K., cornstarch is known as corn flour).
I got out an old fruit and dip tray and mixed the paint right in that. I played around with the measurements until I was happy with the consistency. For each section of the tray I used about 1/4 cup PLUS 2 tbsp of cornstarch and 1/4 cup water. Use a small whisk to mix it up and add some food colouring to tint your paint. I used Wilton icing gel colours, but regular food colouring would be fine.
I filled the middle section of the tray with water for rinsing the brushes and handed it over to the kids.
They started in the drive-way, and then moved to the patio stones at the front porch. The stones made a smoother canvas than the driveway.
